3 · Why the gas is not on your terpene panel
In 2021 a group published an analysis of the compounds behind the skunk and gas character in cannabis, using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography rather than the routine single-dimension method a testing laboratory runs. They were looking for something the standard method could not resolve, and they found it.
The character traces to a family of prenylated volatile sulfur compounds. The dominant one is 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol, structurally related to the compounds in skunk spray and to the off-note in beer that has been exposed to light. It is present in cannabis at trace concentration and its odor detection threshold is extraordinarily low, which is the combination that lets a compound nobody can measure dominate everything a customer notices.
A terpene panel screens a list, and sulfur is not on it
A routine terpene panel is a targeted method. The laboratory screens for a defined set of terpene analytes, typically twenty to forty of them, and reports each one against a calibration standard. A compound that is not on the target list is not reported as absent. It is simply never looked for.
What that means for a buyer
The consequence for a buyer is precise. Two OG Kush certificates can show closely matching terpene columns and produce completely different results in a finished product, because the compound doing the identifying work was never measured on either document. A certificate proves what it tested. On this cultivar, more than any other, what it tested is not the whole story.

Search for an OG Kush terpene profile and you will find myrcene named as dominant on one site, limonene on the next and caryophyllene on a third. Each source publishes its version as fact. None of them cite a batch.
They are not contradicting each other so much as describing different plants. Growers have propagated OG Kush as cuts for three decades across every growing environment in the country. A cultivar name is a genetic starting point, not a specification, and what a given plant expresses depends on the cut, the climate, the feed, the harvest window and the drying regime.

8 · Formulating with the profile
The fragile part of this profile is not the pine. Sulfur volatiles are among the most reactive and volatile compounds in the bottle, which means the signature note is the first thing an open bottle or a hot blend costs you.
Working with a gas-forward profile
- Cap immediately, every time. Trace volatiles leave first and they are the reason anyone specified this cultivar. One pour per run, then close it. Purge with nitrogen if you have it.
- Bring the base to temperature before adding terpenes. Never the other way round. Every degree above what the blend actually needs takes something out of the top of the profile.
- Start at 5% by weight. Adjust upward to a typical ceiling of 8%. Gas-forward profiles are easier to overshoot than they look, and the fuel note goes from signature to solvent quickly.
- Store cold, dark, sealed and upright. Freezer for long-term storage, ambient only while in use. Never warm a thickened bottle on a hot plate to speed it up.
- Evaluate in the finished format. A gas note behaves very differently in a cartridge than on a strip, and carrier bases mute it substantially.
